Besieged Stories from The Iron Druid Chronicles Kevin Hearne Books

I feel like Im betraying my best friend. I was an early adopter of the Iron Druid series. I went crazy for it. Told all my friends, found Kevin on FB and Twitter. I even (gulp) bought a signed hardcover of one of the books. Each one seemed to get better and better for me and I felt like I was taking the journey not just with atticus but with Kevin as well. Then came the change. I dont know if it was $$$, the publishing world in general or boredom but between this and the Purloined poodle I find myself just as bored as Kevin must be. As sad as I am that the Iron Druid series is ending I am happy that if Kevin isnt enjoying writing it ( which is what I am sensing) then we wouldn't enjoy reading it. Lets address my problem with this book on its own.
The Price. Maybe im just too used to getting everything I read for free thru Amazon Prime but The Iron Druid has been literally one of the only books I buy each year along with RA Salvatore. This is way overpriced. $5.99 is what it should have been.
The stories. For the 1st time ever I actually stopped reading one of Kevins books to go and read something else. I was that uncommitted. I just didnt feel involved in the stories. Normally I devour his books but instead I would read a few pages and find something else to do. It felt phoned in and done as a money grab. ( It hurts to say that cause the KH I see on Twitter and FB is not a money grab guy).
Lastly I hope and pray that he was re-invigerated to finish the series and bring about a conclusion for this that it deserves. Id be heart broken if Atticus met the same boring slow fate as this book. Im sure you put all that excitement and energy towards the Giants book you have coming out and im pumped for that. I hope it makes up for this.

Besieged Stories from The Iron Druid Chronicles Kevin Hearne Books Reviews

NUMBER OF HEARTS 5
It was so wonderful to be back in the world of the Iron Druid!! I simply love this series.
Besieged is a book of short stories that are in the IDC world. They are stories that help fill in some of the gaps between stories and answer a few questions. The last three shorts are leading up to Scourged (which Kevin has said will be the last book *tears*).
As always I let the amazingly talented Luke Daniels read this story to me. Luke is one of my favorite narrators. His ability to bring Kevin’s characters to life is simply amazing.
I honestly don’t know what I am going to do if the IDC is really coming to an end. Guess it is time for a re-listen.

Disclaimer
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Penguin & Random House Audio in exchange for an honest review. This review is my own opinion and not a paid review.
I would not have expected to find myself giving the book only three stars.

When I first stumbled onto the series about a year ago I gobbled up the entire set in about a month.

Yet I find myself somewhat dissatisfied with this book.

First, and this is not actually Kevin's fault, I was expecting the next sequel, not a collection of short stories. I did not deduct a star for that, nor did it prevent me from enjoying the book in an overall sense.

Having said that, I do have two criticisms.

First, it felt a little phoned in. It would be valid to criticize me for making that criticism under the old saying that if I think I can do better I should try it myself. My point is not that Kevin is a bad author it is in fact the opposite. I just did not feel that this book was quite up to the craftsmanship I had gotten used to.

The second is more concerning because I would not like to see it become a habit…

I don't mind winning author expresses view points through his characters because it can be a very interesting way of exploring new ideas that hadn't occurred to me.

Having said that, I thought Kevin was a little heavy handed with the political stuff in this book. To be clear I am drawing a distinction between expressing few points that come from a particular philosophical place and the expression of politics in a very naked sense. There were some places in this book where I actually felt personally insulted. That's strictly an emotional reaction, not an intellectual one but I cannot and will not pretend that I didn't feel like I was being slapped in the face more than once.

I am not the fierce druid's father and I do not like being made to feel as if I am.

I look forward to Kevins next book and I just hope that he's not quite as angry when he writes it.
Wow, where to start... Kevin Hearne is a gifted storyteller, and I passionately followed his Iron Druid series through the first eight books. For me, this is the first book that truly stumbles in the series. I was frequently distracted from the exciting storylines by interjections of leftist political perspectives. Unfortunately, these perspectives were not presented in a balanced manner, but rather in a snarky, cynical, condescending, and reductionistic way, with a tone that conveyed that those who did not agree probably belong in the "basket of deplorables." Incendiary topics include, but are not limited to the evils of European colonialism, white male privilege, capitalism, racial and ethnic profiling as part of international travel, creationism, enhanced interrogation, and Emperialism. My frustration over the simplistic treatment of these topics resulted in my thoughts drifting out of the storyline, diminishing my enjoyment of the book. My hope is that this aspect of Beseiged is an anomaly for The Iron Druid series, and that Scourged avoids alienating loyal readers like me based on political ideology.
