When you're in the mood for a light, funny series of books about a family just this side of reality, seek out Lisa Lutz's "Spellman Series". I've just finished reading Book 2, "Curse of the Spellmans" - where Isabel ("Izzy") Spellman - middle child and reluctant PI in the family business - attempts to come to terms with her four arrests and the problems they entail. The arrests - she only counts two as serious - are for going against a restraining order to track a "subject" who she is convinced is a wrong-doer. Trying to prove herself right, she involves family members, a really patient cop, a bar owner, and several other people who love her with varying degrees of patience.

There are six books in the series, and I'm reading them all, in order. I suspect that's the right way to do it. So far, Lutz brings her characters along with a good sense of development. The books are quite enjoyable.

I was absolutely amazed to have stumbled upon the Spellman series by Lisa Lutz!
Her books remind me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books and Jen Lancaster's fabulous memoirs but with a magic all their own. Izzy Spellman is a Private Detective for her family's agency. She is investigating a string of copy cat vandalism crimes reminiscent of her own days as the neighborhood teenaged vandal.
She has issues with entering a building by the front door, a window seems to be her preferred means of entry. Sprinkled liberally with laughs and footnotes, you won't be able to put the book down. Then you'll wait anxiously for the appearance of the next book in the series. Happy Reading!
I started this book over a week ago and could easily have finished it the same day. However, the thought of being without izzy spellman forced me to read slowly and relish every plot, every sarcastic comment, and each and every enjoyable footnote. Curse of the Spellmans picked up where the Spellman Files left off- with just as many laugh out loud moments as the original. This time Izzy is obsessed with her parent's suspicious next door neighbor aka the "subject" and Lisa Lutz keeps us guessing at what he is up to until the very end. Curse of the Spellmans is a must read if you enjoy a fun mystery with endless laughs.

Footnote to Lisa- Please write another one quickly- spellman withdrawals are painful!
It took me a little while to get into this book. But it quickly grew on me. This family is the poster family for distinction. In addition to the mysteries involved to capture your attention there is the very unique cast of characters. I wish they were real and I knew them even though they would be high maintenance friends....they would certainly keep life interesting.
This book was so highly recommended by friends that I was expecting it to be very good, and was told it was very funny.

I'm 100 pages in, and haven't had a good laugh, but I'm willing to say maybe it's just not my taste? I've been looking for something to replace the dismal hole that has become Stephanie Plum and had hope this could bring back the belly laughs, but for me it hasn't.

The second book in the Spellman Files series finds Izzy in trouble again. She has been arrested 4 times in the past few months, mostly due to her new neighbor, John Brown, whom she is convinced is up to something. Even her family is acting strangely; her father appears to be sneaking off to go to the gym, her mother goes off in the middle of the night to vandalize a motorcycle, her brother's perfect life seems to be on the rocks, and her sister has friends and whispered conversations on the telephone, but has also almost killed Henry, a cop and friend while learning to drive. Izzy is determined to figure out what is going on, regardless of the trouble she might get into in the process. Making things more complicated, her absent roommate returns, making her apartment unlivable with his loud parties and stinky cigars. Told mostly as a retrospective overview to her mostly retired Jewish lawyer, the story is witty, hilarious, and has wickedly fun characters that fall on the right side of over the top. Beneath the humor, the characters do have some real connections and feelings which is what sets this series above most of the books that it might be characterized with which tend to border more on the ridiculous. There are characters that the author obviously wants to write about Izzie, Henry, and Rae. We know next to nothing about the parents, and David (the generic "perfect brother" trope) is incredibly one-dimensional. Since book one we've been told that Petra is Izzie's lifelong best friend, but two books later and there is zero evidence to support that claim.

Also, while I realized early on that solving mysteries wasn't the point of the books, the first book established that our protagonist actually had some deductive skills. These, along with every available ounce of common sense, are utterly lacking in this second installment. The main mystery of John Brown could be solved within the first few chapters by anyone who had seen a single episode of Law & Order or CSI. It felt like the author was so busy giving the three main characters sarcastic things to say that she phoned in the mystery.

But, the redemption is that this family is interesting. The slow burn romance being kindled between Henry and Izzie is sweet, though predictable.

And I think that is why I will keep reading. While the mysteries aren't mysterious, and some characters have zero depth, there is a likability and comfortability to the Spellman clan that I enjoy. Though I hope the third book helps me think better of the parents, who seem not only neglectful of their children, but downright mean at times. I also wouldn't mind a filling out of David. These are long enough books that we could be spared a half-hearted attempt to show off Izzie's lack of detective skills and instead be given what we read the series for The Spellmans.
