This is the continuation of the McNab saga. Both the younger brother Andrew and the older brother and chief, Archie are married. (These stories are in the midst of war and in another novel and rather funny since again, Archie kidnaps a damsel as a way of getting money for his clan.) In the midst of the adventures of Archie, a travelling French minstrel has always been around and he comes into full focus in this story of Morrigan McNab and Dragonet, the minstrel who is really a monk and French knight. This is really a very touching story as Morrigan is a very accomplished fighter and thief and does not quite see herself as a feminine person who can marry and have children. She takes Archie's place as Chief of the Clan. Amazingly, to both her and Dragonet, she is attracted to the minstrel/monk and he to her even though he has taken a vow of celibacy. As they do the "dance of attraction," they are thrown together as they are both a part of the troops waging war against the English and later as engage in the search for a silver box that is in demand by many bishops of the church. In spite of the many obstacles they face, love conquers all and there is a happy ending.
This novel, unlike others, has kind of a religious theme and presents an interesting view of history of the Inquisition, the Shroud of Turin, and the Templars.

Morrigan McNab gets her story told. I found Morrigan to be an interesting character in the previous books. She enjoys the role of bandit, dressing like her brothers and having a 'manly' role. But when she finds herself spending time with Dragonet and exploring feelings she never knew existed, her life changes. She's quite the warrior and protector. Loved the poisoned hairpin and the damage she inflicted with it. Very entertaining and adventurous book.
Amanda has done it yet again. She has created a beautiful story with believable characters who actually develop and evolve along the way!
I love how she was able to peel back the layers, a little at a time with Morrigan, our heroine. Just when you think you have her figured out, Amanda gives us another peek at another layer and I found myself happily surprised. Morrigan is a very strong woman who simply wants what is best for her family and her clan. She wants to be feminine but doesn't quite believe she can be or deserves to be. And I like the fact that she isn't whiny or wimpy about it. She maintains her strength and resolve and independence along the way while evolving into the fine woman she wants to be. How cool is that?
And our hero, Dragonet. Wow! He has his own obstacles to overcome and he does it with honor and integrity. It was pleasant to see a hero who isn't brooding or dark or fighting inner demons. It was also nice to have a hero who hasn't slept around taking every lass that he can along the way.
The story is exciting, intriguing and funny. No one and I do mean no one makes me laugh out loud until I have tears in my eyes like Amanda does! I also like the fact that the `love scenes' aren't vulgar or too descriptive!
On a scale of 1 to 5 I give True Highland Spirit ten stars! ;o) I honestly enjoyed the story and cannot wait for Amanda's next book!
This was my first Amanda Forester book but not my first Highland novel. I'm a die hard Hannah Howell fan and was seeking a Highland fix. With that said True Highland Spirit is vastly different than Howell's books. Which took getting used to but not long.
Forester creates truly believable characters and weaves a plot like I haven't seen in a long time. Her research is evident but with her own flare and beliefs. I was thoroughly intrigued, entertained, and found myself still thinking of the story a day later.
I'm a professional reviewer for Romancing the Book, Coffee Tea and Romance, and at my own blog The Belle of Boise. In addition to that I am also a romance author and literary strategist. To reach me my email is bri@belleconsult.com I hope my review was helpful.
Morrigan McNab has turned thief in order to provide for her destitute and impoverished Clan. She and her elder brother (Archie) carry out underhanded orders for an unknown (but sinister) source in trade for food as payment for their Clan. And in the process of their usual robbing of a hunting party, Morrigan meets Sir. Dragonet, a French Knight posing as a Minstrel among the Scots.
Morrigan always puts her Clan first above anything else. She dresses, works and fights like a man...she's accepted that she'll most likely never marry because her Clan needs her for their survival. For this reason she purposely chases men away with her sarcasm and sharp tongue. But Sir Dragonet see's through both her disguise (as a boy) and her indifference to men. He see's the passionate, seductive woman hidden beneath. He see's her for the rare treasure that she truly is. Hidden in plain view. And he desperately fights his attraction to her.
Sir Dragonet has two missions to accomplish in Scotland. He must find and inlist supporting Scottish Clans to unite with the Duke of Argitaine of France, who is planning to wage war against England's King Edward. And he must find a rare relic...a silver chest among french treasure stolen from France by the Templar Knights and hidden in Scotland many years before, and return it to France. Staying true to his two missions, Sir Dragonet keeps women at a distance as he has taken a vow of celibacy. Yet Morrigan slips past his defenses before he realizes it.
I loved this story of romance and attraction among the time of war and turmoil. This is a story of two people finding love in spite of everything that works against them. It's a story of sacrifice, of seeking repentence and finding forgiveness. It was just an overall sweet, albeit innocent romance.
I love how this Author incorporates and weaves Historical facts into her fictional plot. It's a history lesson within itself.
The downside (for me) is so much narrative and not enough dialogue. But that's just me...
