Inside Out by Maria V. Synder

Inside Out by Maria V. Synder is a dystopian society where people live in an underground cube divided into levels. Their population is divided into two sets, the Scrubs and the Uppers. The Scrubs do all the hard work, keeping their world working and clean while the Uppers basically sit on their butts and tell the Scrubs what to do. The Scrubs live in the lower levels in cramped close quarters while the Uppers live in better conditions. The Queen of the Pipes, Trella is the protagonist. She is a tough, loner who has few friends and does not trust easily.

Cogan, Trella's best friend tells her that there is a new prophet, Broken Man, who says he knows where the Gateway (entrance to the outside) is located. Trella wants Cogan to stay away from Broken Man so he doesn't get fed to Chomper and die. Trella sets out to prove that Broken Man is a liar but ends up starting a revolution instead.

I thought the characters were intriguing. You can see the growth of Trella's character throughout the book. Some of the secondary characters could have been developed a bit more but it does not detract from the story.

The underground world that Snyder has developed comes alive with her vivid descriptions. Snyder's writing style and use of imagery, allows the reader to experience the life of a scrub. You feel the heat, the humidity, you hear the overwhelming noise that everyone is making, you smell the nasty body odor from the person next to you, and you feel the hopelessness and despair that they must feel. I think it takes a special writer to stir up and conjure such actions from its readers. Snyder is that such writer.

Inside Out does start out a bit slow but I think it needs to so you get to know and have a better understanding of the dystopian world. Inside Out is a definite must read and I can't wait to read Outside In next.

Inside Out Maria V Snyder Books Reviews

Quite enjoyable. The action really picks up at to 50% mark. I did find the sector recitations a bit difficult to keep straight & could have done with a schematic to visualize it. The mention of sector & quadrant designations meant virtually nothing since I couldn't work it out spatially. But in some ways, not having it did help to keep me as in the dark about Inside, Gateway, the Gap areas & how all these pieces fit, as the characters trying to work it out.

Trella was a great character & narrator who truly grows as the story proceeds. I wanted her to trust earlier but it was easy to understand that given her experiences & world, she was doing so on pace. After I accepted that, I settled right in & went with it. The secondary characters are well drawn for the most part, except our "villains". I'm assuming this is because we are following Trella's POV but I hope that we're given something more than "Travas want ultimate power & are evil" as the ultimate reason for their actions, as the series progresses. Most of the guys in the book are written well, Cog, Riley, Jacy & Logan, but I very much wanted Trella & Anne-Jade to forge at least a closer working relationship. I thought that there was room for more than just one chica doing very plot-relevant things & all the good bits Trella skipped didn't need to be the just domain of the guys. The ending was exciting & the cliffhanger makes me want to read the next in the series.
Inside. For the scrubs Inside is always crowded. Always noisy. Never a moment's peace. Never a chance to be alone. Never a chance to think.

Work ten hours, rest ten hours. In shifts. Week after week. From the fourteenth centiweek on. Do your job. Hope for nothing.

Trella refused to hope and was quick to dismiss the prophets who tried to instill it. What was the point? She practically knew every inch of Inside. She wasn't called Queen of the Pipes for nothing. Inside was everything. There was nothing more.

To escape the crowds, smells and noises that were ever present in the lower levels, she would hide in the ducts and spaces in-between. What might have been claustrophobic for some was an escape for her.

And the brief glimpses she had of the upper levels made her long for that much open space. So when a prophet finally appeared who claimed to have proof of the Gateway to Outside, a reluctant spark of curiosity and hope finally broke through the metal layer Trella kept around her heart.

And that changed everything. Something was set into motion that couldn't be stopped and Trella would have to risk everything she had - her friend, her life and the others who would put their safety on the line for her - to get the answer to whether Outside was more than a myth.

***

Inside Out is a highly imaginative and well-constructed dystopian novel. The detail the author used in creating the world of Inside is phenomenal. Readers will be able to visualize every inch of Inside that Trella has explored, feel the press of the crowds in those two dreadful levels which contain the scrubs and get a true sense of what life is like for those kept in ignorance and without hope.

Trella isn't your typical hero, but she is tough, independent, honorable and most of all loyal. She is willing to sacrifice herself to save her only friend and put her life on the line for someone else's beliefs.

The pace in Inside Out is not quick, but there is a goal, a purpose and a number of puzzles to solve. And the tension that builds will keep you on the edge throughout.

While this does have a somewhat Science Fiction feel to the story, it is also a wonderful study of human behavior for people who are kept under firm control, with strict schedules, no personal freedoms, separated into a classist system and left in the dark about the past and without vital pieces of information.

Inside Out will show you just how much people can surprise you. This book, and series, is a must read for those who enjoy stories where the underdog fights the system, David battles Goliath and where one person can make a difference. And yes, there is a bit of humor and a little romance thrown in to round this out nicely.
