The First Days As the World Dies Book One Rhiannon Frater 9780765331267 Books

In my life I have read no less than five hundred works of zombie and or undead literature. In my honest opinion, Rhiannon Frater's viewpoint of a zombie apocalypse is more precise and to the point than any I've read before. Her talent isn't just scaring us with the visceral carnage these creatures can inflict upon the living, but rather her ability to cause us, the readers, to become totally invested in the lives of her characters. You will love some of the characters as well as detest some of the others. Just be prepared for a wild ride through "Hell on Earth".............

The First Days As the World Dies Book One Rhiannon Frater 9780765331267 Books Reviews

I did like this book and would recommend it to other zombie fans. If it were possible, I'd probably rate it 4 1/2 stars but I couldn't quite go with 5. The main reason is that one of the main characters got to where she was really getting on my nerves. It was the former housewife. I'm sorry--I've read several books since this one and I can't think of her name.

Anyway, she often struck me as really childish and obsessive. She was kind of creepily obsessed with and jealous of the other main character, whose name I also can't think of now. That would be the lesbian lawyer. I kept wanting Housewife to just grow up already. I suppose the enthusiasm she developed for killing zombies was supposed to count as character growth but, to me anyway, it came off as childish.

I liked the lawyer a lot better. She acted like she had some sense and her thoughts and reactions struck me as much more realistic. Well, except for one thing.

This character is presented fairly early on as being a lesbian who loses her partner when the zombie outbreak first happens. She has a bit of survivor's guilt and she mourns the loss of her wife while still managing to try to survive the new world they've been thrown in. I thought those parts were pretty well handled.

The part that kind of rankled was that after she meets up with a hot guy--SURPRISE! Now suddenly she's bi. I didn't care if she was gay or straight really but the turnaround just didn't ring true to me. The author made her being a lesbian such a big part of the character for the first part of the book (It wasn't the main part of her character but it was a big part) that the sudden shift into crushing on the guy was a bit jarring because never once prior to this does she identify as having any orientation other than being gay.

In general, I found the side characters to be much better written than the two main ones. I found most of them interesting and more well-rounded, especially the old couple they meet in the small town.

The zombie action in the book is pretty good. They're the old fashioned Romero style zombies, as is only right and proper.

I did find myself interested to find out what would happen in the next book. If it had been priced more in the $5 than the $10 range, I probably would have gotten it. So far, I haven't been able to talk myself into it.
I am a die hard Walking Dead fan and I thought this book would be interesting from a female point of you. I have to agree with another reviewer, the first chapter of the book is the most chilling thing I have ever read. Robert Kirkman is a great writer, but Rhiannon Frater has just raised the bar on surviving with The Dead!
When I got a few chapters into the book, I admit I had the thought that this was just another version of The Walking Dead, but it is not. You do fall for the characters, and some of their experiences are similar, but let me

assure you that the zombies are totally different, and the feel of the story is more raw and un-nerving.
I have never watched The Walking Dead and been scared to go outside at night to walk the dog. After reading The First Days, those noises you here-send little chills up your spine, because in Katie and Jenni's world...by the time you here the little noises...it's probably too late!
I would recommend this book and can't wait for the next book. I would recommend reading As The World Dies Untold Tales Volume 1 before going on to book 2, Fighting To Survive
Thanks Rhiannon for sharing your wonderful characters with us. Really like this book!
This book definitely felt like the author's first effort (a few editing issues, a few underwhelming choices by the author) however I thoroughly enjoyed the first few chapters. I kind of have a weakness for writers that allow their characters genre awareness; the characters are not only aware of zombies but express their preference (fast vs slow, etc).
As many have said in the reviews, it starts out extremely high-energy though it does start to calm down and that's where my naturally nit-picky self came out. There is a lot to pull apart in this book, though I don't think, as some have said, that the "politics" detracted from anything. If the two main characters had both been straight or if gun rights hadn't been brought up in Texas, I would have found that less believable.
I truly don't know if I will read the next book in the series but, two years after purchasing it, I will still re-read it when I go through my "Zombie phases" of Colson Whitehead, Max Brooks, and the extremely painful Walking Dead books.
