First things first: I laughed out loud more than once. It was a goofy, ridiculous book that was pretty awesome. Now for the problem. And it's a doozy. Attempted rape played for laughs.
I'm actually having a really difficult time with all the funny haha magical rape in these books. I mean, it's treated like it's no big deal, like it's good fun for everyone. And ... that's really wiggling me out. The writing being good enough to bring it off convincingly is kind of skeeving me out, too.
These are very charming books but I'm probably not going to be able to read them further, which is a shame because they're extremely well thought out, detailed, fast paced, and amusing.
It's just... rape, ya know? I mean, they treat attempted murder pretty lightly too, but. That could be a joke. The excuses for magical sexual coercion just don't do it for me.
I kind of want to drop it to 2 stars but I do understand that not everyone is as bothered by this as I am, and if you're happy to suspend your moral compass enough to buy into mind control rape that everyone enjoys as a fun and beneficial side effect, more power to you.

Playing with Fire A Magical Romantic Comedy with a body count edition by RJ Blain Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
My first book with this author....just no. Beyond the bizarre breeding habits of paranormal species, the entire first half was a whining heroine. I couldn't get past the unmitigated hatred her parents had for her, with no explanation from the author. The premise that she believed Samuel hated her , no answer why EVERYONE failed to show for work, the over the top abilities that even for a paranormal was a hard stop for me, several hints that she was "more" that went nowhere, and last but not least Samuel"s family. I wouldn't have been surprised if Mothra showed up.
"Working as the only human barista at a coffee shop catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day."
Bailey is testing out her magic when she gets ensnarled in trouble when Chief Quinn asks for her help. Years later, he's divorced, unhappy and blames Bailey for his woes. Now, Quinn's former brother-in-law asks for her help. She know she should say no but she can't resist his come-hither gaze. Bailey's in for the ride of her life and just when she's got a handle on things, Chief Quinn's ex-wife makes Bailey's life miserable.
What a fantastic magical romantic comedy! The plot moves lightning quick and I laughed out loud many times. Bailey's my favorite character and her inner dialogue is reason enough to buy this book. Highly recommend!
My Rating 5+ stars
This is a great read and I can't wait to read more about these characters. Bailey's insecurities become a little overdone and tiresome through some parts of the book but it's a fast paced exciting read with a bit of a different twist on some traditional supernaturals. I seriously had trouble putting the book down to get regular work done. This is my first book by this author and I enjoyed it immensely. I'm now interested in reading some of her other series. I recommend it for those who can laugh a bit at themselves, see their own insecurities and sympathize with Bailey, who don't want explicit sex scenes, and who want to read a book just for entertainment.
The assorted supernatural beings, their interactions and their [reproductive] habits were original, including the bizarre version of angels, and especially the "cindercorn" (a firebreathing, napalm-eating unicorn!) that transformation potions turn the heroine into. The plot was never boring, if requiring heavy suspension of disbelief (e.g., a gorgon and a centaur somehow mated, and their offspring appears completely human?!).
However, there's too much emphasis on her sexual fantasies about the hero, especially for a fade-to-black book with a personally inexperienced heroine. I've enjoyed many books containing romances both with and without the smexy stuff, but this sends mixed messages/ sets up false expectations. I prefer when the building of an *emotional* connection is better demonstrated, not just stated.
She's also selfishly hypocritical re. incubus powers, etc. she refuses to be seduced (she's no pushover!), but allows a situation where someone else will be. Her abysmal self-esteem (her parents are caricatures of emotional abuse) and her lack of verbal self-control both get to be a trifle overdone.
The writing itself was no problem, and the editing was good — I only caught a couple minor typos or grammar issues, less than in many "major house" publications.
My massive queue contains several [first-in-series] freebies and bargains I've picked up by this author (her summaries and samples draw me in!), but this is the first title I've (finally) read in full. Given my preferences, starting with the only self-described "comedy" may have been a poor decision, but I expect her other series' will be less silly. I definitely still intend to read them.
