Merlin Blade The Merlin Spiral Robert Treskillard Books
If I had read this when I was in my early-to-mid teens, when I was devouring every Arthurian or Celtic-influenced story I could find (and reading The Fates of the Princes of Dyfed over and over and over again), and had both the inclination to love and the patience to get through intensively-recomplicated adventures, I suspect it would quickly have become a favorite.Unfortunately, more than a decade later, while I can admire what Treskillard has done to (as another review put it) "incorporat[e] his story into history" rather than borrowing from history, and what he has done with the Matter of Britain, my tastes have grown and matured away from that single-minded and somewhat uncritical fascination, and I have more books to read and less time to read them in, so I personally found this book less appealing than my younger self would have.
The beginning (the first forty percent or so of the book) was fairly engrossing, and the end picked up and grabbed me just as I was beginning to waver toward the Eight Deadly Words ("I don't *care* what happens to these people!"). The last four or so chapters are even strong enough to keep me wanting to read the next volume (when my limited finances, and especially limited time with too many books already, permit). Still, though, I'm too old (and too distracted) to appreciate _Merlin's Blade_ properly. That probably requires rereading, and slower reading, neither of which it made *me* inclined to.

Merlin Blade The Merlin Spiral Robert Treskillard Books Reviews
Merlin's Blade is an epic tale of good and evil, of love, not only for a young man and woman, but also for friends and family. It shows the strength and importance of a man's words, the promises he makes, and the courage he must have in order to protect that which he loves. These principles are lacking in much of today's culture, and need the sort of reinforcement this book provides for the building up of young men for our future.
The writing itself is masterful, the author is adept at metaphor in such a manner as to avoid cliche and even surprise the reader with the truth of his comparison. The story is well paced, neither too fast nor too slow. Its religious elements are intricately woven into the plot in a manner which would make Tolkien or Lewis proud. Fantasy and Christian fiction lovers alike would enjoy this book.
My 12-year-old son adored the story just as much as I did, and found qualities in each character which were easy to relate to. As a mother of a young man and avid reader, this is exactly what I strive for. A book which teaches my son to be stronger, builds up his character, and makes a lasting impression.
Although I received a copy of this book from the publisher for my honest review, I also bought a copy since my son stole mine.
MERLIN’S BLADE
This is a new take on the beginning of the Arthurian legends and the author has started by giving us the story of Merlin as a young man.
In the opening of this trilogy we are introduced to an 18 year old Merlin who has been let half-blind and scarred by wolves when he intervened to save his young half-sister when it appeared she was under attack. Merlin has done his best to overcome his disabilities but his father makes him feel like an failure because of the guilt he feels in not getting there in time to stop his son from losing his sight. Merlin is a Christian, but his stepmother his a Druid and has managed to get her husband and their daughter to hate the priests and the religion that have turned so many of the people from the old ways of the Druid religion.
We are introduced to characters who come alive as the story unfolds. The reader is given a version of how and why the sword that is a mainstay of the legends came into play. I’ve always enjoyed the Pendragon legends and I liked this enough to want to finish the series.
MERLIN’S SHADOW
In the second novel we find Merlin and company as they attempt to flee with Arthur from Vortigern who has fallen under the spell of the stone and is determined to both Merlin and Arthur so he can rule as high king. He has agreed to spare Natalenya because his son Vortipor wants her for himself. As they flee north hoping to find safety they find themselves in danger not only from Vortigern but also from the Picts who are once attacking pillaging the land from the north. When they are trapped between the two forces and Vortigern and his army flees they are offered the choice of dying of becoming slaves of the Picts. Merlin has vowed to protect Arthur until he is old enough to take back the crown that belongs to him so they become slaves.
In the meantime his younger sister becomes a servant to the evil of the “Voice” and is changed from a young girl who has memories of her brother and his kindness to the evil sorceress Morgana. Morgana loses all her innocence as she is tricked by the “Voice” into putting a torc around her neck that she is unable to remove. Completely under the influence of this evil she embraces all the darkness of the ancient religion and does everything possible to destroy Merlin and all those with him.
MERLIN’S NIGHTMARE
Merlin has kept Arthur by safe by hiding both his and Arthur’s true identity. Arthur is now a young man of eighteen who is reckless and takes many unnecessary risks. He is also unaware of his destiny. They have lived in security in a hidden valley but the time of safety are at an end. Once again the Picts are advancing and fearing that their valley will be discovered Merlin has convinced his uncle to join in the fight to stop them. Meanwhile, Vortipern has called for men to stop the Saxons who are advancing from the south and his enjoy has approached the valley asking for help and is ordered to leave.
Morgana has been waiting or years for Arthur to become a man so the sword can be removed from the stone. She is manipulating both Merlin and Arthur so that will return and release the sword freeing something much worse than the demons that she has created to do her bidding. Her hatred has only grown and she’s determined to see Merlin, Natalenya and their two young children destroyed along with anyone who dares to help them. She will not be satisfied until Brittan is returned back to the dark religion of the druids with her as it’s Queen.
